In an effort to help as many people as possible with computer problems, the Terry College Helpdesk has developed this checklist of steps for you to follow prior to dropping off your laptop. This will aid our staff in quickly and easily resolving your problem. Please carefully read and follow the directions below and provide information in the blanks where indicated.
Before bringing your computer into the Help Desk, please perform the following four tasks, which can improve system performance and aid the Helpdesk staff in diagnosing potential problems. These services are Windows Update, Microsoft Office Update, Ad-Aware spy ware removal, and F-Secure Anti-Virus.
- Run Windows Updates. Direct your computer's Internet Explorer browser to www.windowsupdate.com. Download and install all critical updates or high priority updates from the item marked Express Install. Reboot once the installation is complete. You may need to run Windows Updates multiple times to install all updates. Note in the blank below which version of Microsoft Windows you have and what service pack is installed. You can find this information by clicking Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System.
- Run Microsoft Office Updates. Direct your computer's Internet Explorer browser to http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate. Download and install all updates that the website has listed for your version of Microsoft Office. Reboot once the installation is completed. Note the version of Microsoft Office that you have installed in the blank below. You can find the version information by opening an Office application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and clicking the Help menu and "About Microsoft Office".
- Run Ad-Aware spy ware removal. Ad-Aware SE is available online from www.lavasoftusa.com. When installed, the software defaults to update itself first (if you have an internet connection) and run a full scan. Ad-Aware removes internet enabled software called malware or spy ware. Allow it to scan your computer and remove any items that it deems unhealthy. Please note the definition file listed in the main Ad-Aware program window here: ___________________________.
- Scan with F-Secure Antivirus. If you do not have F-Secure Anti-Virus software and would like to install it, please visit www.virus.uga.edu to download your free copy (Note: You will be prompted for your UGA MyID and password to download the software.) Find the F-Secure AV icon in the system tray by the computer's clock (It is the upside-down blue triangle pictured below.). Right-click on the icon and choose "Options…" When the F-Secure Settings and Statistics window opens, click on Properties. A new window will open. You need to click the tab labeled updates. If you are connected to the internet, then you can click the update button located there and let F-Secure update the virus list to the latest version before you scan. Please note the date ____________ and revision ______________ listed for F-Secure AVP. Exit all of the open Windows and click Start -> Programs -> F-Secure Anti-Virus -> Scan all local hard disks. Allow the program to scan all files and delete any infected files. If you use Microsoft Outlook to check your email, this software may detect a virus in your email file called outlook.pst. You cannot delete the detected virus from that file so you need to note the email message title and delete the infect email message from within Outlook.
